Street names as listed on the 1904 Chamber of Commerce city map compiled and drawn in 1903 by Félix Violé are in boldface, followed by the present name of the street, if any, or its geographical location, or its fate, if known. If you care to check any of these streets, you can find the map in the UCLA map room. Streets that have not changed their names are not listed. In the chart below, only the final two digits of the Los Angeles zip code are given

I cross-checked the names against the 2002 Thomas Guide, but this is an unofficial site. For the best genealogy of your street’s name, call the city Planning Department.

In the old days, each subdivider would pick his own names for the streets, sometimes choosing the names of his wife and children, but more often opting for typical English-American names familiar to him and to his midwestern sales prospects.

Sometimes, though, real imagination was shown. Some of these old streets had wonderful names. I particularly like Alegro, Bonanza and Confidence, which lay a bit east of the USC campus, in alphabetic order, replaced later by mere numbers. Many tracts were laid out alphabetically, like Berendo, Catalina, Dewey, El Molino, Fedora, Hobson, Hidalgo (a little mixup there), Irolo, Jasmine, King and Lardo in a grid bounded by San Marino on the north and Pico on the south, west of Vermont and east of Western.

Of course, having the same street name march all the way across the city is sensible. It doesn’t matter if you are from Hancock Park or Hyde Park — you know that Fairfax, La Brea, Crenshaw, Arlington, Western, Normandy and Vermont will line up side by side like so many Boy Scouts to help you from getting lost if you wander into an unfamiliar part of L.A.

Then there were the unusual name changes. As, for example, changing Grant St. in Cypress Park to the general’s first name: It is now called Ulysses St.

And who was the Ruth Upham that Ruth Upham Avenue was named after? And what of the sad tale of Juliet without her Romeo?

Los Angeles, with a population of something around 110,000, was smaller in area than it is now. It had reached out to take in Highland Park and Garvanza in the northeast, although the bucolic farmland of Eagle Rock was still beyond its grasp. Los Angeles was bounded on the far west by Arlington St. or Western Ave. and on the south it reached down to the agricultural land around Slauson Ave. in parts. The east boundary ran along Indiana Street (as it does today), but continued due north to about present Figueroa St., thus excluding the Monterey Hills area and half of El Sereno.

Q. Why I am doing this?
A. It beats hanging out at the pool hall. (But not by much.)
