We offer three utilities to compute EDs for 1940 addresses. These utilities are described below. To determine which utility is best for your circumstances, take a look at this Tutorial Quiz. Or you can jump right in and get started with our Unified 1940 ED Finder.

The first is this ED Finder utility in which you will be able to compute the ED from the 1940 address in major cities directly. All cities having at least 25,000 or more in 1940, and many smaller ones as well, are on this website. A number of volunteers helped with this work.

The second is a separate 1930/1940 ED Converter utility that will allow you to convert a 1930 ED to a 1940 ED. So you first need to find the 1930 ED using this ED Finder utility with the year on top set to 1930, or using the ED Description utility for 1930. Once you have it narrowed down to a single ED, you will see a button labelled "1940 ED". Clicking that button will take you to the 1930/1940 ED Converter utility with the 1930 ED prefilled for you.

The third is the ED Description utility for 1940 which works best for all rural areas, and institutions, but does cover the other EDs as well.
