INTRODUCTION
It's important to keep in mind that, with the exception of New York and Vermont, there are no
family discounts for the new healthcare plan premiums. Each member of a family is priced as an
individual, and the premium for the family is nothing more than the sum of the individual premiums.
That's not to say that there is no such thing as a family plan. Family plans do have deductible and
out-of-pocket maximums for the family as well as for each family member.
Although there are benifits to family plans, a discount on the premium is not one of them.
A few examples will make the calculations of the premiums obvious.
We will show the calculations for a single person, for a family of three outside of New York and Vermont,
and for a family of three in New York
EXAMPLE 1: A SINGLE PERSON
AGE 40 IN MIAMA FLORIDA
INCOME OF $30,000
This is straigtforward since the entire family is just one person. Fill in the boxes as shown below.
Notice that the subsidy calculation shows that the person qualifies for a subsidy of $60 per month.
If he chooses the first plan on the page, the monthly premium of $247 is reduced to $187

EXAMPLE 2: A FAMILY UNIT OUTSIDE OF NEW YORK AND VERMONT
AGES 50, 45, AND 18 IN MIAMA FLORIDA
TOTAL FAMILY INCOME OF $60,000
Fill in the boxes as shown below, listing the ages of all three family members. Notice that the subsidy
calculation shows that the family qualifies for a subsidy of $339 per month. If they choose the
first plan on the page, the monthly premium of $746 is reduced to $407.

EXAMPLE 3: A FAMILY UNIT IN NEW YORK
AGES 50, 45, AND 18 IN BROOKLYN (KINGS COUNTY) NEW YORK
TOTAL FAMILY INCOME OF $60,000
Fill in the boxes as shown below, listing the family composition as being two adults with
children. Notice that the family qualifies for a subsidy of $566 per month. If they chose the
first plan on the page, the monthly premium of $1,024 is reduced to $458.
